The Mission Viejo Library has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the California State Library to initiate a Family Place Library Program, a statewide initiative for young children, families and caregivers. The LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) implementation grant was written by Senior Librarian Marie Navrotska-Poff and Library Assistant Mary Locke.

The Family Place Library is a center for early childhood information, parent education, emergent literacy and socialization and family support.  Expanding the traditional role of children’s library service, the Family Place offers a new opportunity for libraries to play a vital role in the life and health of their communities.  The Family Place Library builds on the knowledge that good health, early learning, parental involvement and supportive communities play a critical role in young children’s growth and development.

The Mission Viejo Library will offer parent/child workshops, an expanded parenting collection, and an enhanced children’s space as features of the Family Place Library program.

For more information, call the library’s youth services desk at 830-7100, extension 5107.

Mission Viejo Library patrons opened their hearts and donated 2,463 pounds of food to South County Outreach last year, according to food drive coordinator Marlene M. Ford.  The library has been collecting food since last spring to benefit the non-profit organization, which was formed in 1989 to provide emergency assistance to South Orange County residents.

According to South County Outreach, every 40 pounds of food collected feeds a family of four for four days, and, South Orange County children receive 60 percent of the organization’s services. Food donation barrels are located in the library’s lobby at 100 Civic Center.

Residents can also donate food at the City’s Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way.  Canned and non-perishable foods such as cereal; rice; beans; tuna; peanut butter and jelly; spaghetti sauce; and pasta are needed most.

For more information, call the library at 470-3076.

These days Mission Viejo Library Reference Desk personnel are busy fielding questions about how patrons can download eBooks onto their Sony eBook Readers. This influx in inquiries follows a report by Amazon.com that the company sold more eBooks than hard-cover books this past Christmas.

Thanks to a donation of a Sony eBook Reader from the Friends of the Mission Viejo Library, librarians can help patrons learn how to download books from the library’s free eBook collection, which includes more than 500 titles.  Patrons can browse the library’s online catalog at www.cmvl.org to find copies of eBooks.

Downloading eBooks is free, but a free Mission Viejo Library card is required.

A sculpture created from cans, plastic bottles, broken toys and other recycled materials is now on display at the Mission Viejo Library.

Sculptor Richard J. Hinger donated a piece of artwork that spells out the word “Read” to the library, after a resident and fan of his work suggested it. The colorful and inventive sculpture is one in a series of works Hinger created for libraries.

The series is entitled “Lehighton Letters” and is made of discarded and recycled materials that usually end up in landfills. The found objects are then assembled and covered with brightly colored paints.

The “Read” sculpture is on display in the library’s Young Adult area for all patrons to enjoy. The Mission Viejo Library is located at 100 Civic Center.

More of Hinger’s work can be seen on his Web site at www.richardjhinger.com.
