If you’re a jazz lover and even if you’re not, you won’t want to miss “A Sizzling Summer Sunday Jazz Salon” featuring Karen Gallinger and her Jazz Trio on Sunday, August 19.
This spectacular musical event, presented by the Capistrano and Saddleback Valley Committees of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, is at 3:30 p.m. in the Mission Viejo Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center. Wine and appetizers will be served.
From mastering cello in grade school, singing in the choir and madrigal groups in high school to studying music and theater in college, Karen Gallinger picked up much experience along her way to becoming a talented jazz singer. She started her career in 1975 performing with guitarist Tony Verheyen. In the 1980s, she opened for such notables as Tony Bennett, Toni Tennille and Kenny Rankin and later years appeared at Fullerton, Costa Mesa and Santa Ana jazz festivals.
Gallinger also played the lead in the 1996 musical “Is It Just Me or Is It Hot in Here.” A few years before, she was the featured vocalist with the John Parker Big Band Tribute to Duke Ellington, an all-star band that included veteran jazz masters Buddy Collette and Plas Johnson. With two albums under her musical belt - “Live at the Jazz Bakery” and “My Foolish Heart” – Gallinger delivers a wide array of songs in different styles like swing, blues and contemporary pop with a jazz flavor. She has Sarah Vaughan-like range and is “one to be heard” among today’s jazz divas.
Tickets are $40 and are available by calling 949-859-6861 or lynn@youngewest.com. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Philharmonic of Orange County.
