In response to current crime trends, Mission Viejo Police Services is reminding residents to take proper home security precautions and to be aware of scams.
“Home Security – Tips for Summer” is a list of preventative tips that address the most frequently reported crimes in South County. Residents are encouraged to follow these tips (click here) while at home, work or on vacation to reduce their chances of becoming a victim.
In addition to the Home Security tips, the Scam Alert is a tool designed to increase resident awareness and arm folks with knowledge to avoid becoming a victim of a scam. While many scams are targeted at seniors, anyone can fall victim if unaware. Read the scam alert by clicking the following link: http://cityofmissionviejo.org/DepartmentPage.aspx?id=1122.
Remembering these simple tips is essential to personal safety.
“It’s important to take crime prevention seriously,” said Lt. Chris Wilson, Chief of Police Services. “Keeping Mission Viejo the safe City we have come to enjoy takes citizen involvement. Residents can effectively decrease or eliminate crime by following these simple tips and by staying alert and aware for scams, suspicious people or circumstances.”
Residents should call the Orange County Sheriff’s Department to report all crime, suspicious people or circumstances. Residents are also encouraged to start a Neighborhood Watch group if their neighborhood lacks one. Neighborhood Watch is a two-meeting program meant to bring folks together to decrease or eliminate crime in their neighborhoods. The training, provided by the Sheriff’s Department at no cost, will help people and their neighbors to identify situations in their neighborhood that should be reported. Residents interested in starting a group should contact Mission Viejo’s Crime Prevention Unit at 949-470-8433 or crimeprevention@cityofmissionviejo.org.
