The Mission Viejo Library is gearing up for its 2012 SummerREAD that kicks off July 2. The exciting summer reading program offers something for everyone.
Little ones ages 0 to 24 months are invited to participate (with an adult) and play the Babies and Toddlers Board Game. Designed to encourage parents to read with their little ones, the game is played by completing simple early literacy activities such as reading nursery rhymes or doing finger-plays. Children who complete the game will receive a board book, and the adult who plays the game with them will receive a tasty treat for their efforts.
Children ages 2 to 12 can play the “Dream Big, READ!” board game. Just for signing up, they will receive a book bag, bookmark and reading log, and will earn little prizes along the way for reading. Children and their parents will also enjoy special free programs including a magic show and comedy juggling show. Those who complete the game are entered into a grand-prize drawing and are invited to the spectacular SummerREAD Stars Celebration.
Teens between the ages of 13 and 17 can sign up for the “Own the Night” summer reading program. Upon registration, they’ll receive a book bag and reading log. After reading and reviewing five books, they can earn a paperback book of their choice from the library’s Teen SummerREAD bookshelf. They’ll also earn an entry into the grand-prize raffle for each book they read and review. Grand prizes include American Express gift cards, autographed books by popular authors, and a NOOK SimpleTouch ereader. Teens should stop by the library’s reference desk each week throughout July for a different craft or game as part of the “Boredom Busters” activity series.
Adult SummerREAD, “Between the Covers” is a fun, easy way to earn prizes while reading your favorite books. Adult participants are eligible for a weekly book give away and a grand-prize drawing for gift cards to local merchants and restaurants. There is also a yummy “sign-up incentive” for the first 100 participants.
All programs run during library hours through July 31. You can register starting July 2 at the Mission Viejo Library, 100 Civic Center, or online at cityofmissionviejo.org/library.
