M.G. Lord, author of “The Accidental Feminist,” will appear in the next Writers Present program on March 8.
“The Accidental Feminist” is a fascinating look at the behind-the-scenes drama of Elizabeth Taylor’s film career. In this captivating novel, Lord reveals many little known facts about Taylor that give us a true picture of both her personal and on-screen life.
The legendary actress lived her life defiantly in public—undermining postwar reactionary sex roles; helping directors thwart the Hollywood Production Code, and as a member of the vanguard of fund-raising for AIDS research in the 1980s. Yet her powerful feminist impact was hidden in plain sight.
Lord is also the author of “Astro Turf,” a family memoir about Cold War aerospace culture and “Forever Barbie: The Unauthorized Biography of a Real Doll.” A graduate of Yale, Lord was for 12 years a syndicated political cartoonist and columnist based at Newsday. She teaches in the Master of Professional Writing Program at USC.
This free Writers Present program presented by the Friends of the Mission Viejo takes place at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 200 Civic Center. To make a reservation or for more information, call 830-7100, ext. 5105 or e-mail libreference@cityofmissionviejo.org.
