The Saddleback College Veterans Memorial has been selected to receive the prestigious George Washington Honor Medal Award, the highest award given by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge National Awards Program. The award recognizes exceptional projects that reflect the high ideals of the American spirit.
College President Dr. Tod Burnett will receive the award on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club from the Orange County Chapter of the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. Also saluted will be the planners, builders and donors whose project paid tribute to our men and women who served or are currently serving in the armed forces.
The memorial’s concept began in 2004; ground broke four years later; and with help from community members and donors, the memorial came to fruition after six years of building. The Veterans Memorial was completed and dedicated in April of 2010.
Community members and local city councils assisted by purchasing namesakes on the benches and donors purchased bricks laid on the floor of the edifice, with names to remember those serving in our country’s military.
The awards presentation luncheon is from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 26772 Avery Parkway and includes guest speaker Assemblywoman Diane Harkey. Tickets are $45 per person or $80 per couple. For more information, call 949-495-4567 or e-mail joycevanschaack@cox.net.
