On Saturday, January 14 Bones west will amaze and dazzle audience members with its impressive display of talent in a special 7 p.m. program at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way. Founded by George Roberts, Bones West is an ensemble of 25-40 trombonists who are joined by a rhythm section and vocalist.

Then on Saturday, January 21, the Golden Age of Radio will take center stage at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber at the Mission Viejo Civic Center, 200 Civic Center. Dr. Allen Zeltzer, Fullerton University Drama Professor Emeritus, and the Palmia Players, will present old-time radio shows – “The Bickersons Fight Back”; “Abbott and Costello – Who’s on First”; and “The Thin Man.”

A week later, the Lord of the Strings show will feature guitar virtuoso Jeff Peterson, the “Slack Key Superstar” from Hawaii.
Born on the island of Maui, Jeff Peterson grew up on the slopes of Haleakala where he was introduced to the rich heritage of Hawaiian music by his father, a paniolo, or Hawaiian cowboy, on the Haleakala Ranch. The music that he heard from his father and other paniolos as well as the slack key on classic recordings by the Gabby Painui Band, Leonard Kwan, and Sonny Chillingworth made a deep and lasting impression on him that he continues to draw inspiration from today. Jeff has had the honor to work with a wide range of artists and groups including Eric Clapton, slack key guitarist Ledward Kaapana, James Galway and many more. Jeff achieved a milestone in Hawaiian music at the 47th Annual Grammy Awards on in 2005 when a recording on Palm Records featuring Jeff and other island artists, “Slack Key Guitar, Volume 2,” won the first Grammy Award for best Hawaiian recording.

Rounding out the excitement this month is the Timeless Melodies presents Rodgers & Hart at 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 29 in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 200 Civic Center.
