Volunteers of the Friends of the Mission Viejo Library’s Amazon project raised $1,850 from two book sales on Amazon this week. The books were from anonymous donations to the Friends of the Library Bookstore. The books’ value was researched and listed on Amazon in December.
The sales include the “Dense Chlorinated Solvents & Other DNAPLs in Groundwater” book that sold for $499; and a four-volume set of books on Australian opals, “A Journey with Colour,” which sold for $1,350 to an opal expert in Holland, Netherlands.
Books listed on Amazon by the volunteers are donated items that are either too expensive for the library’s bargain prices of 50 cents to $5 or are not needed for the library collection.
The Amazon project is run by 23 volunteers who each work at least two hours per week. The money generated by Amazon sales is donated back to the library by the Friends of the Library to buy books and materials for the library’s collection. Last year, the program netted the library $25,000.
Since the Friends of the Mission Viejo Library is a 501 C3 non-profit organization, people who donate books receive a tax donation receipt from the bookstore along with the satisfaction of knowing their donations are going to a good cause.
Donations can be dropped off at the Friends Bookstore located by the library’s main entrance during its normal operating hours:
Mondays – Thursdays: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Fridays: 1 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
Saturdays: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sundays: Noon to 4 p.m.
