With a new year underway, residents are encouraged to make a “green” resolution by using reusable shopping bags.
In an effort to curb use of plastic shopping bags, the City once again is offering five free reusable shopping bags (while supplies last) to residents. The bags are available between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Public Works counter on the first floor of City Hall, 200 Civic Center.
The need to use reusable shopping bags is there, as plastic bags are bad for the environment. Consider the following facts:
- 14 plastic bags contain enough petroleum to drive a car one mile.
- 380 billion plastic bags or wraps are thrown away in America each year.
- An estimated 100,000 marine mammals die each year from suffocating on plastic bags.
Plastic bags litter the landscape, clog waterways and endanger wildlife. Plastic bags take hundreds of years to decompose, and recycling rates are low.
The City has long been a leader on the environmental front and has worked to educate the public about ways to preserve and protect the environment. Offering free reusable shopping bags is one simple way the City hopes to make a difference and help Mission Viejo reduce its carbon footprint even more.
