Students from the Mission Viejo High School International Thespian Society collected 15,058 pounds of food – doubling the amount accumulated last year – during their annual Halloween food drive for the less fortunate.
The drama students hosted the food drive as part of the national community-service program “Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat – ‘Cause Hunger is a Scary Thing” on Oct. 28. The group donned Halloween costumes and canvassed neighborhoods collecting food donations for the needy. The students have been active in the campaign for the last 7 years and collected 3 tons of food last year.
The effort was led by student Dillon Steckbauer with help from his mom and peer Emily Young.
“We will be awarded the Golden Harvest Award from the International Thespian Society and brought in the most food for one school in the state of California,” said Kathy Harris, chairperson of the school’s visual and performing arts program. “Go Diablos!”
