At its November 14, 2011 meeting, the Planning and Transportation Commission will hold a public hearing to review the environmental documentation associated with a City initiated petition submitted by the City of Mission Viejo Public Services Department for the development of a dog park on approximately 6 gross acres of vacant land located to the south of James G. Gilleran Park on the westerly side of Felipe Road, between Tamarind and Fieldcrest.
For the purpose of State compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act, the City is processing an Initial Study / Mitigated Negative Declaration for the proposed project. The proposed dog park will provide three separate areas for dogs to run off-leash as follows: (1) large dogs will have a fenced area that totals approximately 1.4 acres; (2) small dogs will have a fenced area that totals approximately 0.6 acres; and (3) a separate fenced area that totals approximately 0.1 acres will be provided for people that want an area for their dog to exercise by itself.
In addition to the three dog exercise areas, the proposed project includes surface parking for 42 cars, a pedestrian walking trail around the perimeter of the dog park, landscaping throughout the park and the building pad slopes, low-level safety and security lighting, bench seating with shade canopies, three drinking fountains, and split rail and chain link fencing. The east half of the proposed dog park, which comprises approximately 2.71 acres, is located in the County of Orange, and the remainder is in the City of Mission Viejo. The 2.71 acres of County of Orange property will be annexed into the City of Mission Viejo by the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) if the project is approved. The City of Mission Viejo property is located in the R (Recreation) zone.
The Planning and Transportation Commission meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. or soon thereafter in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 200 Civic Center.
If further information is desired, please contact the Community Development Department at (949) 470-3053. A copy of the Initial Study / Mitigated Negative Declaration can be found on the City’s website at the following link: http://cityofmissionviejo.org/CommunityDevelopment/. The staff report and related agenda materials for the November 14, 2011, Commission meeting will be available for viewing on November 10, 2011, and can be found on the City’s website at the following link: http://dms.cityofmissionviejo.org/sirepub/meet.aspx.

Great! Really looking forward to a dog park in Mission Viejo. I’d much rather stay locally and spend my money at the local shops and restaurants than having to drive all the way over to Irvine.
What a beautiful park this will be!
FYI – This is the second to last meeting on the dog park – please attend!!
Dog Lovers Unite! We need to support this project – we REALLY need a dog park! I’m in agreement with Brian, don’t need to drive all the way to Irvine.
Thank you!
I’ve been a dog owner for over 35 years and as wonderful as this sounds the big drawback is that dogs can catch disease from other dogs. For this reason, many veterinarians do not recommend taking your dog to a dog park. Therefore, I will not use the dog park and besides we have a wonderful walk area along Oso Creek. “If only some negligent dog owners were responsible enough to pick up after their dogs”. Why not spend the money to complete the Oso Creek path to the lake?
I might suggest that folks view a wonderful You Tube presentation of the Oso Creek Trail at
and notice how many dog owners are enjoying a walk with as many as 18 dogs along the Trail. Does one think that these folks will use a new dog park? Most of these folks enjoy using the trail almost every day to exercise their dogs.
Having moved six years ago from Mill Valley in Northern California’s Marin County, that which I miss most is the wonderful dog park very similar to Mission Viejo’s proposal which Mill Valley built back in the late nineties. I can vouch first hand as to how much of a positive impact a dog park can be for both our canine charges and ourselves.

Unfortunatley my little cute dog does not get along with other dogs like many other dogs, and I have to walk with her, which is a good thing because it makes me exercise too. I think many of Mission viejo residence enjoy walking with their dogs around our city parks and it is better to spend the budget to expand and finish the parks that people and dogs both can use and enjoy them, like Oso Creek path, ofcourse the dog owners should be a little more concern about picking up after their dogs, thats all.
Fara, it’s good that you know your dog doesn’t do well at dog parks. But, the exercise a dog receives from running freely, without a leash, is bounds and leaps beyond what they receive being walked. Both are equally important to both owner and pets!
Attending the Nov. 14th meeting is imperative!
If you can’t attend the meeting, email your support to the commission at cd@cityofmissionviejo.org. Thanks!
This dog park is a wonderful addition to the city of Mission Viejo. For those of you whose dogs are not comfortable with socializing with the others, there is a separate place for them to play and rest at their own leisure. As well as walking around the entire park to get their/your exercise. It’s a win win for everyone. I don’t understand the resistance.
If this is important to you, make sure you go to this last meeting for our park!!
If you can make the meeting, please try to wear blue (royal blue if possible). Thanks!

You don’t have to be a resident of Mission Viejo to attend the meeting!

What a great addition to Mission Viejo. We used to live in RSM and moved to MV last year. We love this town, its people, the neighborhoods and all the wonderful dogs. We do miss the dog park and all the kind people we met when giving our dog the opportunity to socialize with other dogs. The option of a dog park in MV is a super addion to a wonderful city.
I am sorry my husband and I are unable to meet with you all tonight but please know you have our full support for this project.
Yours truly,
Lynn and Stacy Holmes
While I was happy to hear that MV was getting a dog park, I knew I wouldn’t be able to use it with my dog. Now that I see there will be a single dog area I can’t wait for it to be finished! I have the time and ability to take my dog on long walks, but that isn’t the same as letting her run loose in a secure area. I’ve talked to people who can’t walk their dogs far enough due to their own physical limitations and I’ve talked to people who won’t walk their dogs for fear of being attacked by a loose dog. Both are valid reasons for the need for a dog park and since there will be an area for both group and single exercise I think this configuration will benefit the most people.
