Mission Viejo Police Services hosted its annual meeting with local principals this week in a proactive effort to ensure that Mission Viejo students remain safe.
Tuesday’s meeting focused on parking and traffic issues, juvenile services and diversion programs, community services, campus safety, lock downs, and the new “Text-a-Tip” pilot program. City traffic engineer Philip Nitollama gave a presentation about the City’s “Safe Route to School” program.
Superintendents from both school districts and principals and staff from all Mission Viejo public schools took part in the meeting designed to foster open communication and address any problems or concerns.
Lt. Mike Gavin, Chief of Police Services, headed up a strong police presence that included members of the Sheriff’s Department’s S.M.A.R.T. (School Mobile Assessment Response Team); juvenile investigations; probation; and Mission Viejo’s five school resource officers and two motor officers.
“Mission Viejo Police Services has always had a great partnership with both school districts and it was great to see everyone in attendance for this annual meeting and sharing their thoughts about safety in the schools,” Gavin said.

How can we get more detail about this meeting? Living right next to a school I would have loved to hear this information. Who should be contacted about traffic issues?
You may contact the City’s Traffic Engineer, Philip Nitollama, at (949) 470-3068. The City is currently working with each school on a study to develop recommendations to improve pedestrian and bike safety and to encourage more students to walk or bike to school. The study includes obtaining input/feedback from teachers, adminstrators, and parents. We welcome any observations/opinions you wish to share.
