When the Target Symphony in the Cities concert series returns to Oso Viejo Park on July 30, the summer ritual will focus on music, family and fun – and helping those in need. As a part of the Prelude in the Park “Hometown Block Party” pre-concert event, the Mission Viejo Activities Committee will accept donations to support its “Mission Viejo Supports Joplin” fund. The volunteer committee began collecting donations last month to benefit shattered survivors of the tornado that ripped through Joplin, Missouri in May.
Concert-goers can make donations at the committee’s “Christmas in July” booth, which will boast an array of fun-filled family games and activities. Raffle tickets will be available for themed gift baskets. All proceeds will support Joplin. A special mural will also be donated to the Missouri city, which was essentially destroyed by the savage tornado. The “Doves of Peace” mural will be crafted out of glazed ceramic tiles by local mural artist Jennifer Koons and community members.
Along with support for Joplin, the City’s popular concert will feature a cornucopia of music and family fun. Just before the Pacific Symphony takes center stage at 7 p.m., the public will be treated to a spectacular “surprise” that is sure to amaze and delight all ages.
This year, the Pacific Symphony will be complemented by a youth focus, echoed through special performances by the Southern California Children’s Chorus and Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra’s virtuoso young cellist George Ma. Pre-concert activities at Prelude in the Park’s Hometown Block Party kick off at 4 p.m. and include live music by the Vince, Bob, and Buddy Band; a “Circle Art” project by Hiep Nguyen; delectable food from local eateries; a Wine and Beer Garden sponsored by the Rotary Club of Mission Viejo; and tons of family games and activities.
Oso Viejo Park is at 24932 Veterans Way.
