The City Council on Monday recognized Mission Viejo’s waste hauler for its donation to the library, a high school varsity baseball team for its CIF win and local student essay contest winners.
Council recognitions are designed to honor those who make a difference in Mission Viejo.
Waste Management of Orange County was recognized for donating $4,268.55 to the Friends of the Mission Viejo Library from a recycling campaign the waste hauler has facilitated for the past 11 years. Each year, Waste Management donates $5 for every ton of residential recycled material collected from single and multi-family homes in April to the Friends of the Mission Viejo Library, which uses the funding to buy new children’s books for the library’s collection. This year, 853.71 tons of recyclables were collected.
The Council also recognized the Mission Viejo High School Diablos Varsity Baseball Team for its outstanding championship win at the Division 2 CIF finals at Dodgers Stadium on June 2.
“This was the first such championship in the history of Mission Viejo High School and I was there!” said Mayor Dave Leckness with vigor. “The City is proud of you …”
The final recognition of the night went to the winners of the “What the Constitution Means To Me” essay contest. The Constitution and Country contest, sponsored by a nonprofit organization, celebrated those who take the time to study and educate others about the U.S. Constitution.
The essay winners included Timothy Aney and Sonia Zhang from Capistrano Valley Christian School; and Shannon Elizabeth Howell, Seth Thompson and Courtney Clark from Heritage Christian School. Courtland Sherreitt from Capistrano Valley Christian School and Allison Oetken from Pioneer Middle School could not attend but were also honored for their winning essays.
Along with the students, U.S. history teachers Margie Haney from Capistrano Valley Christian School and Emily Updegraff from Heritage Christian School were honored as Teachers of the Year. Both instructors are dedicated instructors who teach and embrace pride of U.S. citizenship.
The City Council meets at 6 p.m. the first and third Monday of the month. To watch council meetings, visit the City’s website at http://cityofmissionviejo.org.
