The Mission Viejo Library’s annual SummerREAD program kicks off July 1, with thousands of youngsters expected to take part in this year’s free fest.
With a “One World, Many Stories” theme, the popular annual reading program is open to infants and children up to 12. SummerREAD, which runs through July 30, is an incentive-based motivational program with rewards granted for reading or being read to for three, six, nine or 12 hours. Children too young to read can participate in the program if someone reads to them.
Youngsters who complete the full 12 hours of reading time will receive a special invitation to the Aug. 2 SummerREAD STARS Celebration party at the Norman P. Murray Community Center, 24932 Veterans Way.
Youth are encouraged to visit the library each week to check out books and receive prizes. The program boasts entertainment programs, compliments of the Friends of the Mission Viejo Library, which sponsors SummerREAD.
Along with SummerREAD, save the date for the following shows (for kids 3 and over) that take place at 2 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. in the City Hall Saddleback Room at 200 Civic Center on the first, third and fourth Saturdays in July:
* “Where in the World is Dave’s Bunny” features a wacky magic show presented by magician David Skale on July 2.
* Participants can watch David Fisher, the world’s greatest rope jumper and a current Guinness World Record holder, in his “Rope Warrior” show on July 16.
* Scott Land Marionettes Theater special puppet show with amazing technology takes place on July 23.
