Hundreds of athletes from Orange County and across the nation are expected to take part in the Orange County International Triathlon in Mission Viejo on Sunday, May 22.
The event is Orange County’s only Olympic distance triathlon. The race kicks off at 7 a.m. and ends by 10:30 a.m. The race consists of a 1-mile swim in Lake Mission Viejo and a 25-mile bike ride beginning on Marguerite Parkway, north to El Toro Road and out through Santiago Canyon. The race ends with a 10K run that starts on the Aliso Creek Bike Trail and follows various trail systems leading back to the lake.
This year, a mini “Aquathlon” and an open-water swim have been added to “make this truly an event for the whole community,” organizers say.
Residents should also be aware of several road closures on Marguerite Parkway, Santa Margarita Parkway and Los Alisos boulevard during the event. Details are available at www.octriseries.com.

I’ve lived here since 1969, there’s not many of us left. Sporting events is how Mission Viejo became know across the nation. First it was the world class swimmers from the Nadadore Swim Team. Which lead up to the privilege of our city hosting the 1984 Men’s & Women’s Olympic Road Race that showed the world what a great community we live in.
If our city continues to show case world class events and althletes from across our great nation and abroad. We as a city should rally together as residents, showing our city pride and bring our youth sports programs, Boy’s & Girl’s Scouts, YMCA programs in the art of giving back to their community, even its just for just a few hours
once a year. Then we all become winners.
Thanks to our City Counsel and the Lake Mission Viejo Association for allowing these races, that bring back the “grass roots” once again on the streets of our great city.
Sincerely
Lou ( Butch) Berry
