The City Council on Monday proclaimed Cancer Prevention Week, honored a 12-year-old boy for his character, received a presentation from a local historian and was feted by the Child Abuse Prevention Center.
City Council recognitions and presentations are designed to honor those who make a difference in Mission Viejo and allow individuals, groups and organizations to educate others.
The meeting began with a musical history “Timeless Melodies” presentation by Larry Maurer that focused on “Songs of the American Experience” and this country’s musical influence and past.
Council members then proclaimed May 29 through June 4 as Cancer Prevention Week. The proclamation comes as Mission Viejo is gearing up for its annual Relay For Life event June 4-5 and the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). Mission Viejo is the only Orange County city to give community members the chance to participate in the study, which will enroll people between the ages of 30 and 65 who’ve never been diagnosed with cancer from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 4. Mayor Dave Leckness happily agreed to take part in the long-term study designed to change the face of cancer research.
The City Council also paid homage to 12-year-old Ethan Taylor for receiving a Community of Character Award for his outstanding character qualities. Ethan received the Community of Character Committee award for epitomizing community service and exemplifying the character qualities of perseverance, caring, responsibility and trustworthiness. Ethan volunteers with the Orange County and LA chapters of a boxer dog rescue organization. He is passionate about helping to care for boxers and to give back to the community. That is also evident by this young man’s vast volunteer work that includes the Samaritan’s Purse International Relief – Operation Christmas Child, Soles 4 Souls, letters and packages to Soldiers in Iraq, Thanksgiving Care Packages for the Needy and Mission Viejo Earth Day.
In addition to the recognition, the City received its own kudos from the Child Abuse Prevention Center for helping to support the organization by collecting diapers, linens and other items during Mission Viejo’s annual Bunny Days event in April.
The City Council meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Monday of the month at City Hall, 200 Civic Center. To watch Monday’s meeting online and for more information, visit http://cityofmissionviejo.org.
