Several free and low-cost programs, classes and events on tap in May at Community Center

Registration is available for a host of free and low-cost programs and classes available in May at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way.

Seniors

Free balance screening
If you are interested in learning tips for preventing falls and about balance solutions, then plan to obtain a free 7-minute balance screening and consultation on the first Friday of each month.

A physical therapist from Balance Rehabilitation will assess head movements, walking and turning techniques and step placements to help people maintain their balance. The screening is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the community center.

Communication/Connection between People
Residents are invited to take part in a 5-week series designed to help people improve communication with family and friends. 

The class is from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday May 3 through May 17 and June 14 through June 21.

Whether someone suspects hearing loss or just wants to better hear/connect with family and friends, Dr. Ronald Reiter, of the California Chapters in Aging, will provide individuals with easy tips to better enjoy life. Registration is available by calling 949-470-3062.

Your Car/Sell or Donate?
If you are tinkering with the idea of selling or donating your car to charity, this May 19 class is for you. 

Richard Kohr, an ombudsman for the Department of Motor Vehicles, will discuss the advantages of both and safe-driving hints. 

The free class is at 1 p.m. Registration is required and available by calling 949-470-3062.

Senior Computer Classes
Learn basic e-mail skills in three classes held at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Fridays from May 6 through May 20.

Laptops are provided. Each class is $15. Pre-registration is required and available by calling 949-470-3062.

Mother’s Day Luncheon
Reservations are available for a special Mother’s Day luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on  Friday, May 6.

Guests will enjoy the music of Tony Rogers while dining on delectable fare to celebrate mothers.  

There is a suggested $4 donation for seniors (60 and over); and $5.50 for others. Reservations are available by calling 949-470-3063.

Myths and Facts of Nutrition
Learn the myths and facts of nutrition in this informative, free program on Wednesday, May 11.

Registered Dietician Lisa Gibson will lead the 11 a.m. free discussion about the latest and greatest suggestions for healthy living. For more information and to make a reservation, call 949-470-3062.

When to Let Adult Children Move Back Home
If you’re perplexed about how to live peacefully with your adult children, then this May 12 program is right for you. 

The free course, which starts at 10 a.m., will focus on considerations that benefit you and your children. Reservations are required and available at 949-470-3062.

Newhart Intermediate School Spring Concert
The public is invited to enjoy a free midday performance by the talented Newhart Intermediate Orchestra.

The free concert takes place at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18. For more information, call 949-470-3062.

Elder Abuse and Scams
Community members are invited to learn how to protect themselves and their home and money from elder abuse and scams in this free program on Thursday, May 19.

Lynn Hayes, an elder law attorney, will lead the informative discussion at 10 a.m. Registration is available by calling 949-470-3062.

Living Well with Diabetes
People with diabetes can obtain timely information from local health care professionals that will help them to live life to the fullest.

This free program is from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on May 19. Dr. Eric Benner will discuss blood sugar and A1C monitoring.

Older Americans Day Luncheon
Reservations are available for the May 20 Older Americans Day luncheon. 

Guests to the 11:30 a.m. luncheon will enjoy accomplished saxophonist Henry Alexander and delectable fare.  There is a $4 suggested donation for seniors (60 and over); and $5.50 for others.

Photoshop Elements
This class will teach people how to digitally edit or alter a picture or photograph. Photoshop guru Art Ramirez will teach students the elements through demonstration. (Students who have laptops with Photoshop should bring them for enhanced class experience).

The class, which kicks off May 23, is from 3 to 5 p.m. on Mondays through June 27.

Cost is $10 per class or $40 for all five classes. Registration is available by calling 949-470-3062.

Sleepless Nights
If you have trouble sleeping at night, this class is for you. Learn the causes of sleeplessness and what you can do to get a good night’s sleep from Bradley Williams of the UCI Senior Health Center. 

The free class starts at 9:30 a.m. on May 26. Registration is available at 949-470-3062.
