The Sierra Club’s Orange County Global Warming Committee on Monday recognized the City of Mission Viejo’s recent installation of a Photo Voltaic “solar” powered system atop City Hall.
Last year, the City installed the 12,000-square-foot panel to harvest rays of sun to benefit the environment and save the City money in energy costs.
During Monday’s City Council meeting, Laura Jackson of the Sierra Club gave Mayor Dave Leckness a solar-powered building decal for City Hall and emphasized the importance of the City’s proactive stance toward benefiting the environment.
“Tonight, on behalf of the Sierra Club, Angeles Chapter and Orange County Global Warming committee, I would like to recognize the Mission Viejo City Hall as a newly solar-powered building,” she said. “We hope you will proudly display this decal as an encouragement to others to go solar. We applaud Mission Viejo for waiving the building permit fees for energy efficient domestic and commercial applications, including solar power, including the implementation of a more efficient paperless application process. Any commercial properties in Mission Viejo are urged to take advantage of the savings and consider energy efficiency and alternative energy options. We invite you to request a ‘Powered by Solar’ decal when you have a new solar power installation in a commercial location.”
The City’s solar-powered system soaks up sun rays and turns the solar energy into electrical power. The solar system is connected to a computer-controlled system that provides a detailed analysis of up-to-date energy generation for the day. The solar project complements Mission Viejo’s ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint through innovative recycling programs and other environmentally friendly projects, programs and events.
