The City Council on Monday learned about the United Nations Art Miles Mural Project and recognized a family for its proactive recycling efforts and four deputies who have worked hard to keep drunk drivers off Mission Viejo’s streets.
The council recognitions are meant to honor those in the City who make Mission Viejo a great place to live, work and play.
Monday’s meeting began with a presentation by the CSUF Irvine Campus Legacies Community Engagement through The United Nations Art Miles Mural Project. Marsha Daughetee, assistant dean of the Irvine campus; and Janice Gagnon, director of communications and development for the United Nations UNESCO Art Miles Project showed a video and spoke about the United Nations Art Miles Project.
The City was recognized by UNESCO, the educational arm of the United Nations that works throughout the world supporting peace through cooperative educational and art programs. Last October, the Art Miles Mural Project and Shoes of Hope event was hosted in Mission Viejo. As a staunch supporter of the arts, the City partnered with UNESCO to bring this program to Mission Viejo, which featured murals from across the globe on display. The community came together to create 12 beautiful murals and hand painted several hundred pairs of shoes that that were sent overseas to third-world countries. Once again, several hundred murals from all over the world will be on display this spring at Arts Alive on April 30-May 1.
Mayor Dave Leckness and Michelle Clark from Waste Management of Orange County followed with a special presentation to Mission Viejo’s Community Recycling Program Award Winner, Shane and Jan Andisheh. The quarterly award is given to a resident or business that goes above and beyond in their recycling efforts. Shane and Jan are passionate about the environment and demonstrate that zeal every day through recycling, conserving water and other “green” habits that truly make a difference. In fact, Jan has been recycling for 35 years and first learned about the importance of doing so from her then young son, who’s now an adult. The couple received a $100 Simon gift card and recycling award certificate courtesy of Waste Management.
Four Mission Viejo deputies were also recognized Monday with the “Deuce Award” from Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD). Each year MADD recognizes law enforcement officers who go above and beyond in their daily efforts to keep drunk drivers off our streets. Any officer who makes more than 25 drunk driving (DUI) arrests in a calendar year is honored with MADD’s Deuce Award. Collectively, Deputies Justin Osterfeld (who was unable to attend the meeting), Tony Aiello, Cary Buechler and Robert Franz made more than 100 Deuce arrests in 2010.
The City Council meets the first and third Monday of the month in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 200 Civic Center. For more information, visit the City’s website at www.cityofmissionviejo.org.
