Work begins this week on the recycled water conversion of the irrigated landscapes at Cordova Park and the Felipe Tennis Center, as part of a continuing City effort to conserve precious drinking water and save natural resources and money.
Converting the park off El Retiroto and the recreation center on Nogal to recycled water is expected to save 13 million gallons of drinking water per year. The project is expected to be completed by spring.
The Public Services Department has been extremely proactive in working with local water districts to maximize the use of recycled water for irrigating City landscapes since Mission Viejo incorporated in 1988. Right now, 70 percent of City landscapes are irrigated with recycled water.
Mission Viejo continues to be on the cutting edge of water conservation and irrigation management. The City uses a computerized central irrigation system that communicates daily with the City’s own weather station located at the Marguerite Recreation Center, adjusting irrigation schedules to daily weather conditions for large park areas in the City.
The slopes and medians located along major street arterials use SMART irrigation technology linked to satellite weather technology managed through web-based programming. This SMART technology stems from a $400,000 grant Public Services received through Metropolitan Water District a couple of years ago for water conservation upgrades.

It would be more beneficial and representative if I were consulted before the action rather than to recruit a reply after the fact. My true feelings are – no amount of water-savings, nor monetary savings of your precious drinking water could ever justify the damage done to your irreplaceabla pets. Dermatologically speaking, there is a “caution” sighn for humans to wash immediately if they touch the unwholesome water. What does that mean to your canine friends who walk on it with their very delicate paws. They also sniff it, drink it etc. It is an unjust and disgusting backstep for civilization to subject our loved ones to such a fate. They have now been relegated to second class citizenship with all the dangers that entails.
