Weighing about 1,200 pounds, 30 boxes full of personalized Christmas stockings were shipped overseas this week to more than 450 members of Mission Viejo’s adopted Headquarters Battalion.
The stockings were stuffed on Saturday by 20 members of the Mission Viejo Marines and Sailors Adoption Committee, which collected community donations to support the Marines who are thousands of miles from home during the holidays.
Though just a small token of this City’s appreciation for its battalion’s endless sacrifices, the stockings mean so much to the troops, Corporal Diehm and Corporal Hillman said. The two Marines, who helped stuff the stockings Saturday, received their own personalized stockings while deployed last year, which helped to raise their morale knowing their adopted family cares.
In other Marine news, the Marines and Sailors Adoption Committee raised about $18,000 this year that was used to send more than 900 Marines to the recent annual Marine Corps Ball and provide emergency assistance to Marines and their families. Through the community’s generosity, the committee also collected more than 600 ball gowns for female Marines and spouses to wear to the ball.
