The City Council in November is expected to proclaim the month as National PH Awareness Month in an effort to raise awareness of a rare and devastating disease.
The council’s expected proclamation stems from a request from a resident who suffers from Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) and is trying to raise awareness of the disease through a support group at Mission Hospital. Pulmonary hypertension is abnormally high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. It makes the right side of the heart need to work harder than normal. It is a rare and devastating disease that affects about 1 or 2 people in a million and usually strikes women in their late 30s and early 40s. However, the debilitating and progressive disease impacts every age group – from babies to older adults. As of today, there is no known cure.
The support group meets every other month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mission Hospital Conference Center on the second Saturday of the month. The next meeting is on November 13. The conference center is located at 26726 Crown Valley Parkway.
