Mounting concerns over the environmental impact of plastic bags continues to prompt Mission Viejo to take action by promoting and encouraging the use of reusable shopping bags.
In an effort to curb use of plastic shopping bags, the City has been offering free reusable shopping bags to residents.
The need is there, as plastic bags are bad for the environment. The best-documented environmental issues against plastic bags are visual: they litter the landscape, clog waterways and endanger wildlife. Plastic bags take hundreds of years to decompose, and recycling rates are low, according to reports.
Each resident can receive up to five reusable shopping bags per household, while supplies last, by visiting the Public Works counter located on the first floor of City Hall between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. City Hall is located at 200 Civic Center.
The City has long been a leader on the environmental front and has worked to educate the public about ways to preserve and protect the environment. Offering free reusable shopping bags is one simple way the City hopes to make a difference and help Mission Viejo reduce its carbon footprint.
