Mission Viejo moms will walk to raise funds, awareness of breast cancer this weekend

Twelve Mission Viejo moms have been training together to walk more than 39 miles in two days during the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Santa Barbara Sept. 11-12.

So far, their team – the Knocker Walkers – has raised nearly $22,000 in their fight against breast cancer.

The Knocker Walkers started three years ago with five walkers. Randi Warner, a resident and mom, talked four of her friends into walking in the Avon Walk not because she knew someone with breast cancer but because she didn’t.

“I had read that 1 out of every 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and I personally had never known anyone with breast cancer,” she said.

Unfortunately, that all changed while training for her second walk. This year, Randi will walk in memory of a mother of three young children who lost her battle to breast cancer in July.

Along with Randi, this year’s Knocker Walkers include Jen Ricci; Cindi Wolfert; Chelli Prouty; Tina Finley; Sheila Abregov; Debi Berk; Kim Bache; Elaine Brault; Missy Burk; Cheryl Warnagieris; and Stacy Zamalloa.

Each team member must raise $1,800 to participate in the 2-day event. The women raised nearly $500 at a fundraiser they held at Mission Viejo-based TK Burger. They have also done individual fundraising on Facebook and through e-mail.

People wanting to support the Knocker Walkers in their fight against breast cancer can visit www.Avonwalk.org and click on “Donate” then “Search by Team” and type Knocker Walkers. Select Captain Randi Warner’s team, participating in the Santa Barbara walk. This will pull up the Knocker Walker Team Page where information on the team and individual team members is available.
