The 13th Annual Soccer For Hope Camp in Mission Viejo raised more than $25,000 for pediatric cancer.
More than 200 kids participated in the recent annual event held at the World Cup Soccer Fields and the Thomas R. Potocki Conference Center at 27301 La Paz Road.
Soccer for Hope is a non-profit organization founded by Oliver Wyss – a former, professional soccer player and survivor of Aplastic Anemia. This event is designed to raise funds for pediatric cancer and educate young participants about cancer and the need to be respectful of other children with medical challenges.
The camp, geared toward girls and boys ages 6-13, is a combination of soccer skill training and valuable life lessons. Kids train with professional players, coaches from nationally ranked college teams and local club coaches.
Several college soccer teams participated this year including Loyola Marymount University, University of California Irvine, Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Los Angeles Galaxy & Chivas USA street team also participated and handed out prizes and game tickets.
Alex Zotinca, an MLS professional soccer player for Chivas USA, signed autographs and answered questions. Mia Hamm, a retired US soccer star, sent more than 200 autographed cards for the kids who attended camp.
