If you were hoping to see the newest stand-up comics Mission Viejo has produced in action on Friday, you’ll have to wait a couple of months for when the next batch graduate from comedy class. The “Students of Stand-up” Comedy Graduation Showcase is sold out, but registration is now available for the next comedy classes that kick off the week of Sept. 7.
The six-week “Stand-up Comedy 101″ and “Taking Your Stand-up Comedy Serious” classes are taught by veteran stand-up comedian and longtime Mission Viejo resident Tom Riehl. The local funny man has worked with the likes of Bob Saget, Paula Poundstone, Alonzo Bodden, Shawn Wayans, and James P. Connolly as well as musical acts Berlin, Three Dog Night and David Pack of Ambrosia. He was also a winner on ABC’s “America’s Funniest People” and host of the cooking show “Food Rules.”
The courses focus on basic joke-writing skills, stage technique, and how to hopefully handle stage fright and hecklers. The advance class takes it a bit further. Students end the courses by performing a “graduation showcase” for family, friends and the community. The next graduation showcase will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 15.
The beginning class takes place from Sept. 8 to Oct. 13, with the “Taking Your Stand-up Comedy Serious” class running from Sept. 7 through Oct. 12. Both classes are held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way.
Cost for the beginning class is $80; with a $100 fee for the more advanced class. The classes cater to people 16 years of age and older.
