It’s been six weeks since 10 people ventured out to the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center in hopes of becoming the next Jerry Seinfeld or Ellen DeGeneres. During that time, they’ve learned basic joke-writing skills, stage technique, and how to hopefully handle stage fright and hecklers. Now, they get to show their friends, family and the world just how funny they’ve become in the first “Students of Stand-up” Comedy Graduation Showcase on Friday, August 27.
The beginning comedy class is taught by veteran stand-up comedian and longtime Mission Viejo resident Tom Riehl. The local funny man has worked with the likes of Bob Saget, Paula Poundstone, Alonzo Bodden, Shawn Wayans, and James P. Connolly as well as musical acts Berlin, Three Dog Night and David Pack of Ambrosia. He was also a winner on ABC’s “America’s Funniest People” and host of the cooking show “Food Rules.”
The public is invited to attend the graduation performance, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at the community center located at 24932 Veterans Way. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for this free show that will feature graduating performers Tammy Descoteaux; Margot Ferron; D. Carole Goodman; Michael Hess; Torey Mang; Robby Millsap; Allan Pilger; Alex Poff; Jordan Sandfer; and Dennis St. Pierre. Refreshments will be available.
While none of the students have ever performed stand-up before, Riehl said people will be surprised at how funny they really are. The evening will also include renowned comedian Ron J. Ruhman and special guest James P. Connolly. Opening musical guest singer/songwriter Paul Breazeale will perform from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.
This free show is expected to fill up fast, so don’t delay in reserving your seat today at www.comedyintheoc.com. For more information, call 949-470-3062.

Thanks for the writeup, we’ve been working hard to make it a good night. It’ll be worth the cost of admission!
