Students, parents invited to Rachel's Challenge presentation Wednesday

The City of Mission Viejo’s Community of Character Committee is hosting a Rachel’s Challenge presentation for all middle and high school students on Wednesday, March 24.

The program starts at 7 p.m. at the Norman P. Murray Community Center, 24932 Veterans Way (behind Newhart Middle School).

Students and parents are encouraged to attend this impactful presentation about Rachel Scott and her legacy for treating others with caring and kindness. After her untimely death in the Columbine tragedy, her family found several journals and artwork that identified her as a young person who truly wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. Using these writings, Rachel’s Challenge speaks to youth in a manner in which they can identify. Her messages include eliminating prejudice, goal setting and being kind to others.

The program has reached millions across the nation and world for changes in behavior toward others, including reductions in bullying, prevention of suicides and treating others with respect and kindness. One of Rachel’s most famous essays invites the reader to perform an act of kindness, and in so doing “you just may start a chain reaction.” This program is being offered with hopes of “filling the room” with 600 attendees to start and continue the Chain Reaction here in Mission Viejo, a Community of Character.

Reservations are not mandatory but will help organizers with planning. To make a reservation, call Mission Viejo Police Services at 949-470-8433. For more information, contact Co-Chair Trish Kelley at trishkelley@cox.net or Tammy Descoteaux at descoteaux@cityofmissionviejo.org.
