The City is seeking to garner community input regarding an exciting experiment Google is planning to launch.
The experiment could make things such as streaming three-dimensional medical imaging over the web; downloading a high-definition, full-length feature film in less than five minutes; or collaborating with classmates around the world while watching live 3D video of a university lecture a reality. According to Google, “universal, ultra high-speed Internet access will make all this, and more possible.”
The company is planning to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country. The experiment will help Google deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. The company will offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.
Google is calling on municipalities and residents to express their interest in its fiber optic trial and provide information about their communities. Information such as the community’s diversity, its interest in having an alternative provider, its willingness to issue permits and create a fast process to build the fiber infrastructure quickly and more is sought. The City is participating in the process by returning a completed Request for Information to the company by March 26.
As part of the process, the City is looking to gauge community input and interest in such a service. Residents are invited to[polldaddy survey="EFF8B150D3D1B3BA" link_text="take a shortpoll"] or post comments to the City’s Mission Viejo Life Blog. Residents can also nominate their cities and get involved.
“This is a unique opportunity for our City to participate in an experiment that could truly impact the way we use the Internet and technology every day,” said Mayor Trish Kelley.

I think it would be great for our city to be one of the test locations for Google.
Please let us know what we can do to promote this.
This would be great providing that it is indeed priced competitively and it does not cost taxpayers a fortune to implement.
We also have to keep in mind that no matter how fast this service is, its performance will be hindered by the rest of the Internet. It’s like having a hot rod car and dirt roads.
I would like to participate. I think the City should advertise this more e.g. press releases in the Saddleback News, OC Register, posting on the electronic billboard at Marguerite and La Paz, flyers at the Rec Centers, library and other community areas, and possibly through the school districts.
Wow, this is awesome! Getting fiber into the home will enable all sorts of things not currently practical even if you are not into medical imaging or worldwide collaboration. Mission Viejo was at the forefront of technology many years ago when Cox used us as beta site for cable modem. The same pioneering spirit is still here. Trish – We’re ready!!!
Higher speed is always great! We would like to participate!
Look forward to a higher speed. Please keep us informed. We would be interested in participating.
