Volunteers are the heart and soul of the City’s Recreation and Community Services Department and several were recently recognized for their contributions at a cultural arts program and special luncheon.
Last year, volunteers donated roughly 35,116 hours of service, translating into more than $771,498 in savings to the City. The City also received more than $76,780 in in-kind donations.
Volunteers wear several hats and lend their time serving on committees including the Community of Character Committee; Cultural Arts Committee; Heritage Committee; Senior Citizen Activities Committee; Marine Adoption Committee; and Student Advisory Committee. Dedicated individuals help with special events and host programs. They work on public art projects, coordinate fundraising activities, and produce monthly character newsletters, posters and community projects.
At the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life – including the National Charity League – donate their time, talents and resources to support a vast number of ongoing social services, classes, programs and special events.
“Our volunteers demonstrate a selfless devotion to giving back to their community,” said Kelly Doyle, Director of Parks and Community Services. It is because of these dedicated volunteers that our department and community center are able to really thrive.”
