The public is invited to take part in a journey of ancient cities and fascinating history through photos and recounted experiences from a historian of religion.
Dr. Jenny Rose will captivate people who join her on Jan. 22 for an animated discussion of Life along the Silk Road.
Life along the Silk Road has intrigued western audiences since Marco Polo first recounted his experiences in the late 13th century. Last spring, Jenny traveled independently along some of that road through Central Asia. In an illustrated discussion, she will take folks to the ancient cities and landscapes of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva in Uzbekistan. People will experience what it’s like to travel to Panjikant in Tajikistan; Nisa and Merv in Turkmenistan; across the Rivers Oxus and Jaxartes of Greek legend; and along the edges of the Kyzylkum desert to visit fortresses belonging to Sogdian rulers and the Towers of Silence denoting their Zoroastrian faith.
Jenny teaches classes on the Zoroastrian religion at Claremont Graduate University and Stanford University.
The public is invited to attend her 7 p.m. free talk at City Hall, 200 Civic Center, and enjoy her photographs, which are on display through Feb. 26 at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way.
