Carl Hankey K-8 School will host its first Hawk Trot on Nov. 20 in an effort to raise money to support a new, innovative program at the school.
The fundraiser comes as the school and parents are trying to raise funding without the cash-strapped district’s help to become an International Baccalaureate (IB) School. Carl Hankey School opened in 1978 and serves about 700 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. International Baccalaureate is known worldwide for quality, high academic standards and curricular leadership. IB programs are usually found in high schools. Once the school is certified, it will be the only public K-8 school to offer an elementary and middle school IB program in South Orange County.
With some start-up money from the PTA and state funding, the school can begin training teachers in the program, but it still needs to raise $60,000 to cover the first three years of the program. The program is said to be great for student learning because it’s designed to engage students from multiple subjects, perspectives and inspire life-long learning.
Middle school students will begin the “trot” at about 9:45 a.m. A pep rally follows at 10:30 a.m. before the elementary kids start trotting at 11 a.m.
The public can help support the school in its five-year plan to become an IB School by contributing funding toward Hawk Trot Day.
The school is located at 27252 Nubles.
