The Special Election in which voters will consider the recall of City Council Member Lance MacLean will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010.
Individuals seeking to succeed MacLean, should the recall prevail, can obtain Nomination Papers from the City Clerk starting today. Candidates have until 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 to file nomination documents and statements of qualification for office. City Council candidates must be registered voters and reside in Mission Viejo.
Each Nomination Paper must be signed by not less than 20 or more than 30 registered voters in the City. Each candidate is required to file a Statement of Economic Interests disclosing investments and interests in real property when nomination papers are returned for filing. There is no charge for filing nomination papers.
Candidates can also prepare an optional Candidate’s Statement, which includes name, age, occupation and a brief description of no more than 200 words regarding their education and qualifications. The Candidate’s Statement is filed with the Nomination Papers and is included in the sample ballot materials mailed to voters. The fee for the Candidate’s Statement is estimated at $1,624 and is payable at the time Nomination Papers are filed.
All forms required for nomination and election to municipal office are available between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) at the City of Mission Viejo City Hall, 200 Civic Center. To better assist potential candidates and ensure prompt attention, appointments are strongly suggested. Reviewing the required forms will take about one hour.
