Members of the public are taking part in today’s blood drive to honor Mission Viejo’s “Hometown Marine.” Organized by Council Member Trish Kelley, the Blood Drive was inspired by 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Alex Minsky who was severely injured after a bomb exploded near his vehicle in Afghanistan. Minsky, recovering at the Palo Alto Polytrauma Center, will soon return to Camp Pendleton where he’ll undergo further therapy on his road to recovery.
Just three hours into the seven-hour drive, 75 people have donated blood and more than 150 are registered with appointment slots booked solid through the evening. Residents are also penning encouraging notes to the wounded Marine and taking part in a gift-card drive to benefit Minsky.
“In my case, I do this to give back. What these soldiers give for us is far more than I can ever do,” said Bruce Hunt, President of the City’s Marine Adoption Committee. “Mission Viejo is the most giving City in the United States and we are proud to live here.” Pointing to the room full of volunteers, Hunt noted that “these are special people who open their hearts on a daily basis. We do it to give back.”
Minsky’s father Russell and two younger sisters spent the day at the blood drive greeting those who came to honor Alex. Steven Ball, Stephanie Sigman and Leslie Ojeda, Alex’s classmates from Capistrano Valley High School, donated blood on their friend’s behalf. Council Member Trish Kelley is thrilled with the turnout and said the community support is overwhelming.
Red Cross representatives announced that today’s turnout exceeded their expectations. Residents who could not participate in the blood drive but would still like to donate can register online at at www.givelife.org. Cards for Alex and donated gift cards can be dropped off or mailed to City Hall, 200 Civic Center, Mission Viejo, 92691.
