The Orange County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad blew up unstable smokeless gun powder at a residence on Buena Vista today to prevent the volatile substance from being transported through City streets. The incident caused the temporary evacuation of five nearby homes.
The gun powder, which contained an unstable chemical, was blasted inside a containment vessel in a trailer at the house.
The Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to the home at 28443 Buena Vista around 11:30 a.m. in response to a routine call from a woman asking authorities to remove old ammunition from her garage.
When the deputy arrived, he found about 20 pounds of smokeless gun powder and called the Bomb Squad after smelling a strong chemical order. Attempting to neutralize the powder, the woman had inadvertently added a volatile chemical that caused it to be unstable.
Authorities safely blasted the powder in two batches. No one was injured and residents returned to their homes.
Work is underway to remodel the 36,000-square-foot Ralphs at 25104 Marguerite Parkway. The City issued a building permit to the grocer on July 22.
The extensive interior facelift includes remodeled deli, meat, seafood and bakery departments along with new check-stand shelves, equipment, fixtures and finishes for the anchor store in the shopping center on Marguerite Parkway and La Paz Road.
To improve circulation, the company plans to give the front of the store a makeover that will feature an enhanced Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility path of travel to Marguerite Parkway. Other exterior improvements are expected to include attractive planters, landscape and a cart corral along with improved screening for trash enclosures and outdoor storage.
Ralphs will host its re-grand opening on Nov. 18.
Grandparents and their grandchildren can enjoy exciting Wednesday theme parties that include crafts, games, refreshments and costume contests.
The parties include themes such as “Where the Wild things are” on Aug. 5; “Mad Hatter Tea Party” on Aug. 12; and a “Luau” on Aug. 19.
The fun-filled events take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way. The parties are planned by the National Charity League (Canyon Chapter) moms and daughters.
Reservations are required a week in advance to take part in these free activities.

‘Keep Your Driver’s License’ workshop Aug. 6
Residents are invited to learn driving tips and other useful information to keep driving safely during an Aug. 6 presentation designed to help seniors take charge.
DMV Ombudsman Richard Kohr will also discuss options people have for getting around when they can’t drive.

Free workshop on California Telephone Access Program, telephone tips for the sight impaired
The Braille Institute at 10 a.m. on Aug. 11 will host a free workshop designed to help people with vision loss maintain independence and continue community involvement.
Participants who attend the workshop at the Norman P. Murray and Community Center, 24932 Veterans Way, will learn valuable telephone and other tips.
