The City is taking reservations for its free Teen Preparedness 2009 Academy that begins July 14. The academy provides community outreach to educate teens in emergency preparedness.
The academy, which is similar to the City’s Community Emergency Preparedness Academy, is designed to teach 14- to 18-year-old residents the basic skills necessary to save lives and protect property when emergency services are not immediately available in the aftermath of a major disaster. Participants learn about the community’s resources and emergency agency procedures to assist the City, police and fire during and after a disaster.
The two-week session covers earthquake and fire safety, first aid, CPR and crisis intervention. Teens learn what to do in the event of an emergency.
Classes will be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from July 14 through July 23.
Graduation will take place on July 25 and will include a disaster drill and special graduation ceremony.
