Ascale model of a 1957 Thunderbird is expected to add some whimsical flare to the new Sonic restaurant in Mission Viejo. The car model is part of Mission Viejo’s citywide public art program and was installed in the public right-of-way for all to enjoy.
The restaurant’s owner, Coast-to-Coast Commercial, LLC, commissioned Coburn Topiary and Garden Art to create a scale model that was sculpted from plasma-cut steel plates topped with a special finish. The firm creates custom topiary sculptures that can be seen in parks, hotels and resorts worldwide. The car lights were custom made and solar lighting was installed for a night-time glow in the front and rear lights.
A special pedestal was designed for the car so that it has that “back-to-the-future” look, as though it is ready to take flight.
The new Sonic restaurant, which opened June 1, is the first in south Orange County. The 1,600-square-foot restaurant at Los Alisos Boulevard and Jeronimo Road includes a drive-through, 15 drive-up car stalls and outdoor patio seating. Servers will deliver orders to customers on roller skates.
