The Mission Viejo Library’s annual SummerREAD program kicks off June 22, with thousands of youngsters expected to take part in this year’s free fest.
Children up to 12 years of age will receive free canvas book bags, compliments of the City’s Public Works Department, and weekly prizes and incentives for the time they spend reading (or are read to) during the program that runs through Aug. 3.
SummerREAD participants and their families are invited to contribute to the South County Outreach Food Drive by bringing a canned food or non-perishable food item each time they visit the library during the six-week program to benefit needy families throughout South Orange County.
A food drive drop-off barrel will be located in the SummerREAD registration area. Items sought include peanut butter; soup; rice; pasta; vegetables; fruit; tuna; spaghetti sauce; and cereal.
