The countdown to the 2010 Census is underway with the U.S. Census Bureau looking to state and local officials and community leaders to ensure an accurate count.
The City, which last month proclaimed its partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau, has established a Complete Count Committee (CCC) – a team of local government, business and community leaders who will work to make sure their communities are counted. The City Community Development Department has been designated as staff lead of the 2010 Census CCC.
As a 2010 Census partner, the City will support the goals and ideals for the 2010 Census and disseminate information to encourage people to participate in the process along with events and initiatives that will raise overall awareness.
The Census, which is mandated by the U.S. Constitution, is a nationwide count every 10 years. Census data are used to distribute Congressional seats to states, make decisions about what community services to provide and to distribute $300 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year.
The Census Bureau has changed the way it conducts the national count by having one of the shortest census questionnaires in US history. The census form will take only about 10 minutes to complete, and answers are protected by law and strictly confidential. Forms will be mailed to households in March 2010. By completing the census form, residents will help their community thrive.
