The 15th annual Relay For Life of Mission Viejo raised roughly $160,000 – exceeding the $150,000 fund-raising goal – during the weekend event at Saddleback College. The number could continue to rise, as online donations are still being collected.
The overnight event, designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs, drew about 1,000 registered participants and 77 teams that took turns walking or running laps. At nightfall, hundreds of luminaries were lit in a moving ceremony to honor cancer survivors and remember those who lost their battle to the disease.
“It is hard to imagine how we can continue to get bigger and better every year, but we had the best Relay ever this weekend,” Council Member Trish Kelley said on Sunday, thanking all those involved for making the June 6,7 event such a success. “As a City Council Member and a fellow team captain, I am so proud of our Mission Viejo Relay For Life! As I mentioned in the closing ceremony, Mission Viejo’s Relay is a ‘poster child’ for the Relay For Life in Orange County and even on a national level!”
