Several beneficial programs, events on tap in April at community center

textDon’t be an April fool, learn how to text
If you haven’t gotten into the groove of sending text messages to friends, family and loved ones don’t fret. The City has just the class for you that will help you surprise your kids and grandchildren by jumping on the text bandwagon.

The class based on the fundamentals of texting is at 10 a.m. April 1 at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way.

Participants will exercise their thumbs and have fun learning the “lingo” of texting and the fastest way to stay connected.

Estate, planning workshops kick off April 3
The public on Fridays from April 3 through May 22 is invited to attend informative workshops designed to help people allocate their investment assets to preserve their wealth.

The workshops take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Norman P. Murray and Community Center, 24932 Veterans Way.

Attendees will learn about living trusts, practical low-cost ways to avoid probate and much more from financial and estate planning expert Peter C. Kote and other local financial and estate planning professionals.

No financial or insurance product will be sold.

Don’t miss informative seminar about falling on April 9
If you are interested in learning tips for preventing falls and about balance solutions, then plan to attend an invaluable free seminar on April 9.

The seminar, presented by Sapan Palkhivala, PT, DPT of Complete Balance Solutions, takes place at 10:30 a.m. at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way.

The presentation will help you learn tips for avoiding falls and other information to help reduce frustration.

Bunny Days Bake Sale April 11
bake-saleHop on over to the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center on April 11 for the senior center’s annual bake sale during the Bunny Days event.

The sale takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the event that is expected to draw hundreds of parents, grandparents and kids for a day of fun and games throughout the center and surrounding park.

The public is welcome to donate and buy home-baked goodies.

Free presentation April 14 by Braille Institute
The public is invited at 10 a.m. on April 14 to attend the “Tips for Money and Labeling” seminar the Braille Institute will host in an effort to assist those with vision loss.

The free program is designed to help people maintain independence and continue being involved in the community.

Diabetes and Diet workshop April 16
Learn about up-to-date recommendations for managing your diet while dealing with Diabetes in a free workshop at 12:30 p.m. on April 16.

Dr. Marwan Edris with Monarch Health Care will discuss eating habits along with restaurants that are “Diabetes Friendly” and how to deal with those that aren’t.

The free presentation takes place at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way.

Take control of your health April 21
The public at 10 a.m. on April 21 is invited to a free presentation regarding Medicare Preventative Services.

The program will focus on the importance of disease prevention; which services are new; who can obtain them and how often; and what you will pay for the services.

The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) through Orange County Council on Aging will present the free program at the City’s community center.

Free midday Newhart Band Spring Concert April 22
Mark your calendars for the free 2009 Spring Concert by Kent Klingbiel’s Newhart students on April 22, as the students delight and amaze the crowd with their impressive musical talent and accomplishments.

The Newhart Band Concert will take place at 11 a.m. in Veterans Plaza near the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way.

Evening Line Dance Party April 24
line-danceGet ready to kick up your heels – or boots – and have a blast at the Adult Line Dance Party on April 24 at the Norman P. Murray and Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way.

The Friday-night bash takes place from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the Sycamore Room with professional line-dance instructor Mel Branham, sporting a host of “foolish” hats, leading all levels of dancers in the art of line dance. Beginners are welcome and encouraged to join the fun and tear up the dance floor.

Cost is $5, which is payable at the door. Refreshments are included.

Newhart Orchestra Concert returns April 29
The public is invited to enjoy a free midday performance by the talented Newhart instrumental music students.

The concert, led by instructor Valerie Petty, is at noon in the Sycamore Auditorium at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way.
