Sunday’s inaugural Relay For Life tennis tournament raised about $1,800 for the City’s Mission Possible 2 team, which will participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Mission Viejo on June 6, 7 at Saddleback College.

The event included 28 doubles teams and attracted close to 200 spectators who supported the daylong fundraising event at the Marguerite Tennis Center.

Mission Possible 2 teammates and City staffers Ashley Blair, Barbara Backes, Sam Cho and Brian Gruner organized the successful event, which was designed to raise cancer awareness and funding for the Relay For Life event. Other City staff members volunteered their time for the worthy cause.

“Sam, Ashley, Barbara and Brian did just a tremendous job,” said Community Services Manager Steve Bell. “They are so committed to providing quality programs to the City of Mission Viejo and consistently do so. They are also dedicated to putting an end to cancer. We are very fortunate to have them here in the City of Mission Viejo.”

The public is invited to learn more about the upcoming Relay For Life event by attending a committee meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26 at City Hall, 200 Civic Center.
