A project designed to ease traffic in Mission Viejo and beyond has been successful in improving traffic flow through 34 traffic signals along a nearly 9-mile stretch of Pacific Park Drive and Oso Parkway in the City; Aliso Viejo; Laguna Niguel; Laguna Hills; and some unincorporated areas in the county.
The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) conducted the Oso Parkway/Pacific Park Drive Traffic Signal Synchronization Demonstration Project to help refine future traffic-signal synchronization projects and develop a Regional Traffic Signal Synchronization Program. The project, which was completed in September, has reduced stops, delays and travel time and has increased average speeds along Oso Parkway and Pacific Park Drive. The project also has been a boon to the environment – reducing fuel consumption and improving air quality.
The project included infrastructure improvements at several intersections and developing new traffic signal timing plans based on morning, midday and evening traffic patterns.
OCTA, after reviewing project results and conducting field monitoring, recommended other improvements to improve traffic flow even more. One recommendation includes making improvements to the turn pockets at Felipe Road. The City already has that traffic-improvement plan on its books as a future Capital Improvement Project.
Project results are illustrated in the following graphs:
