More than 1,500 volunteers this weekend will help decorate the City’s 2009 Rose Parade float entitled “Making a Splash” – adding to the roughly 1,600 volunteers that helped build the City’s flower-bedecked float earlier this month.
Volunteers will decorate during “Dry Flower Days” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center at 24932 Veterans Way. Trips to Irwindale will follow in December for “Flowering Week” where the final touches will be put on the community’s float that will measure 55’ long by 18’ wide when decorated.
Decorating activities that began in October for the City’s float have continued to blossom – demonstrating enthusiasm for the community float-decorating and related activities leading up to the 120th Tournament of Roses Parade on Jan. 1. Olympians and residents will ride atop the float while members of the Mission Viejo Nadadores dive into roughly 10 tons of water as the float travels down the five-and-a-half mile Rose Parade route.
Building the float requires hundreds of volunteers, thousands of donated man-hours and support from the entire community. City officials are elated with the community’s enthusiasm for the float that will feature a 12-foot-deep, 20-foot-long “lake,” which represents Mission Viejo’s iconic landmark, Lake Mission Viejo – a man-made lake nestled near the City’s northern tip.
