The City Council is inviting the public to attend the City of Mission Viejo’s annual Veterans Day Observance at 2 p.m. on Nov. 11 at the Mission Viejo Veterans Memorial, next to the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way.

The United States Army Color Guard from the U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion in Mission Viejo will present the colors, and members of the Mission Viejo High School Choir will sing the “National Anthem.” Reverend Tom Tyree from American Legion Post 862 will give the Invocation. Congressman Gary G. Miller will be there to offer opening remarks.

Lt. Col. Miguel Howe, Commander, U.S. Army Southern California Recruiting Battalion, will be the keynote speaker. Chris Yates, director with the American Heroes Tribute (a local non-profit organization), will unveil the new banners that honor Marine Corporal Salem Bachar (Headquarters Battalion, First Marine Division) and Marine Lance Corporal Daniel J. Santee (a former Mission Viejo resident) who died while serving our country. Their families will receive an American Heroes Tribute banner and an American flag. A new bronze relief will be unveiled as part of the Veterans Memorial. Four members of Veterans of Foreign War Post 6024 will provide the official “Rifle Salute” following the recognition of veterans.

Refreshments will be served in the Sycamore Room of the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center immediately following the ceremony. For more information about the Veterans Day Ceremony, call 949-470-3000. To learn more about the American Heroes Tribute, call 1-800-983-4376.

Seventy-five banners, honoring service personnel who died in the line of duty, are on display at the Mission Viejo Civic Center, 200 Civic Center, through Nov. 16. Each banner honors a member of the military who died in the line of duty with a photo and a brief story about the individual.

Songs that inspired a nation – Veterans Day tribute

Timeless Melodies will provide a tribute honoring the great songs that built our nation and a special tribute to our American soldiers.
