New online program will help residents gain information related to traffic accidents

Mission Viejo residents who have been involved in a traffic collision in town will benefit by a new program that is meant to speed up the process of obtaining accident reports.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department just launched the On-line Traffic Collision Report Program. The program will save residents involved in traffic accidents time by conveniently allowing them to obtain “free” accident reports through the Sheriff’s Web site at http://www.ocsd.org.

Traffic accident reports dated Sept. 15 2008 or later will be available online for up to three years from the date of incident – if they do not involve serious injuries or fatalities, criminal offenses or other protected/confidential information.

The program will require requesters to state proper interest in obtaining a copy of the traffic report, in accordance with Vehicle Code section 20012, and an internal audit trail will capture the information submitted by requesters, including their IP addresses.

Residents can still request reports through the department’s Records Bureau during normal business hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday by calling 714-834-6454.
