Mission Viejo’s obesity rate is significantly lower than the state and national averages, and even drops below the national goal, according to a study released by the St. Joseph Health System Community Needs Assessment.
Adults with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 percent or greater are considered obese. About 34 percent of adults in the country and 22.6 percent in the state fall into that category. Nationally, the goal is to reduce those figures to 15 percent.
According to the study, only 12.6 percent of Mission Viejo’s adult population in the 92691 zip code and 9.8 percent of the adult population in the 92692 zip code fall into the category that would be considered obese. The City has a population of roughly 98,000.
The City of Mission Viejo and Mission Hospital are leading the way to a healthier nation with a common mission to create a healthier Mission Viejo. Encouraging healthy families and lifestyles is essential to the City.
The City will unveil more details about the Mission Hospital partnership and its goals and efforts in the spring issue of Leisure Time.
