The Planning and Transportation Commission on Monday gave the green light to Coast to Coast Commercial, LLC to build a 1,600-square-foot Sonic Drive-In restaurant at the corner of Jeronimo Road and Los Alisos Boulevard. Mission Viejo will be the second Sonic location in Orange County; the other is in Anaheim.
The former Mobil gas station on the one-half acre site will be demolished to make way for the new eatery, which will boast a drive-through, drive-up car stalls – reminiscent of Sonic’s 1953 beginnings – and outdoor patio seating.
Sonic’s standard architecture was customized to complement the surrounding architecture including the recently constructed Target building across the street on Jeronimo Road. The architectural style will incorporate stone treatments and earth tone colors; a tower element; standing seam roof panels in pre-finished copper; and arched canopies and awnings.
Sonic, which began in Shawnee, Oklahoma and dubs itself as “America’s Drive-In,” has grown to franchise and operate the largest chain of drive-in restaurants in the country, with more than 3,300 Sonic Drive-Ins from coast to coast. The popular eateries feature a drive-in coupled with a distinctive menu and personalized carhop service. Carhop delivers the customer’s order car-side, usually within four minutes. Sonic signature freshly made menu items include chili cheese coneys, hamburgers, wraps, sandwiches, and a full breakfast menu. The restaurant also offers an array of specialized drinks including cherry limeade and cream pie shakes.
Construction is expected to begin in several months. For more information, contact Sonic representative Brandon Wesselink at 949-680-4302.
