Take part in City’s 7th annual Clean Up Day Sept. 20

Groups and individuals are sought to don some rubber gloves, grab a bag and help remove trash and debris from in and around Oso Creek on Sept. 20.

Mission Viejo’s Inner Coastal Clean Up Day event, part of a statewide cleanup of beaches and inland waterways, is from 8 a.m. to noon at the Oso Creek Trailhead on Marguerite Parkway. Last year’s creek clean-up event drew more than 250 volunteers.

Inner Coastal Clean Up Day, held in conjunction with Coastal Clean Up Day, is one of California’s largest volunteer efforts. Throughout the state last year, more than 60,000 volunteers worked together to remove more than 900,000 pounds of litter and debris from beaches, lakes and waterways.

Officials say that cleaning the creeks and watersheds that drain to the ocean keeps trash and debris from ending up on local beaches. The event is also part of the City of Mission Viejo’s continuing effort to improve the environment and become “greener.” This is the seventh year Mission Viejo has hosted its clean-up event.

Registration will take place at the trailhead where trash bags and gloves will be dispensed and volunteers will help collect trash and debris in and around Oso Creek and at the neighboring commercial center. At the end of the day, the bags will be tallied, weighed and included in the county’s roll up to the state. For additional information, call 949-470-8458.

In other environmental-related news, the City will be partner with CA Recyclers, a Laguna Niguel-based electronics recycling company, to host an e-waste collection event on Inner Coastal Clean Up Day. This is a great opportunity for residents to dispose of televisions, computers, monitors and other household electronics.

The e-waste collection event will be held 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot at Newhart Middle School, 25001 Veteran’s Way (corner of La Paz and Veteran’s Way). CA Recyclers will give the school three cents a pound for each pound of e-waste it collects during the day. The event will also help raise funds for the school.

For more information, call 949-470-3010.
